"First avant-garde beat band in pop history"

The Monks were five American GIs, stationed in West Germany during the Cold War, who saw themselves as the anti-Beatles; they played their music with a lot of feedback, nihilism and an electric banjo. Haircut in a monk's haircut, dressed in black, ridiculing the military and rocking harder than any other band from the mid-1960s, they were the driving force behind music styles such as; industrial, krautrock, heavy metal, punk and techno.
