Katyn plot

"The untold story of the crime Stalin could not hide"

A few months after the Nazi invasion of Poland in 1939, some 15,000 Polish prisoners of war were murdered by the Soviet secret service in a western area of the Soviet Union. The Nazis discovered the mass graves in 1943 during their tour of Russia and immediately pointed to the Soviets, but they blamed the Nazis. The Allies, meanwhile, decided to close their eyes to the whole thing. In particular, the story of this film follows the survivors of the victims' wives and families, who for decades remained in uncertainty about the fate of their loved ones.

A bit of a long-winded film because of too many storylines. It would be better to focus on one storyline and develop it strongly, like in, for example, The Pianist. The ending is very intense. I've rarely seen such an ending. Unfortunately, just because the ending (the last 10 minutes) is worthy of 5 stars doesn't mean the rest of the film is. The soundtrack is excellent.

For such a fascinating subject, this is an exceptionally dull and tedious film. Personally, I never get into the story and have no connection whatsoever with the main characters. I can understand the structure to a certain extent, but because of the far too long interlude, which is simply boring and adds nothing, all the power and interest, if any, seeps out of the film, only to be jolted awake in the last ten minutes. In that sense, the truth is revealed, and the execution as it unfolded is vividly depicted. This approach is undoubtedly chosen to emphasize the uncertainty, ignorance, and the fact that no one wanted to take responsibility. It wasn't until 1990 that Russia admitted responsibility. Yet, the film fails in that attempt.

The old edited archive footage is beautiful, occasionally including some truly beautiful, almost fairytale-like shots of falling snow, for example, but the film's flawed structure remains. It would have been enough to watch the first ten minutes and then the last, the deportation and execution; the middle section is all shearing and little wool. Unfortunately, a significant missed opportunity. Perhaps this film is spot-on and resonates with Poland as a national trauma, but it doesn't do much for me, which is a shame, because such a subject deserved better.

A few months after the Nazi invasion of Poland in 1939, some 15,000 Polish prisoners of war were murdered by the Soviet secret service in a western region of the Soviet Union. This shocking event is the subject of this Polish film, which is brutally detailed on screen, but unfortunately, all the peripheral details and other plot lines and characters are utterly dull. Ultimately, the fascinating subject itself proves insufficient to make this a compelling viewing experience.
