Paddy (appropriate name for a director who makes a film about magic mushrooms ) Breathnach, didn't realize that he is the director of the phenomenal I Went Down. Here he also makes another special film.

A group of American friends go to Ireland where they meet their Irish friend Jake, who is an expert on mushrooms. They also go straight into the forest, where, according to Jake, the best magic mushrooms in Ireland are found. Well, you know how it ends. The youngsters take advantage of it, one goes out, and the rest don't care and enjoy the trip. Although the trip now turns out completely different: in addition to seeing weird things like a talking cow, some also seem to die or something is chasing them. This must be a heavy trip, or is it something else?

As far as I'm concerned, it's an entertaining film, with a concept that has been used many times before. But hey, as a snack.... Just another standard teenage horror, only this time from Ireland.

3.5*

After being under the influence of magic mushrooms/truffles myself, some friends and I were curious about this film. I usually like to put on a horror film, but of course we wanted to relive our trip a bit. In that respect we have come home from a very cold fair. None of the three of us saw anything recognizable except for a snippet. It's funny that the couple in the film ignore almost every rule about the use of magic mushrooms. After killing the goat they should have turned around already. I personally had already done it after seeing Bluto. Moreover, you don't travel for a full day and the makers really miss the point in this area. So a big disappointment.

What remains is a faint ghost story in an otherwise nice atmospheric environment. Furthermore, no effort is made to avoid the deluge of clichés. The main character might as well have been hit by the windmill. It's not going to be really fun anywhere. I figured that out after about twenty minutes. Then it's nice that the film ends fairly quickly. This is one you can safely pass up.

As one of the friends who attended the story described by Ruudc, I was the one who pulled Shrooms out of his closet after a friend of mine said a few years ago that this was an ultimate film if you had some experience with mushrooms or truffles yourself. I therefore take full responsibility for the otherwise very mediocre to pretty bad experience that the film has given us. The acting was still decent and the environments were certainly there, but Shrooms offers little to no tension, gore or any form of entertainment.

The set-up is intriguing in itself, but as described above: when there is already such a negative experience as hitting a goat and then meeting two rednecks at the start of the day, then go do not then turn to the use of magic mushrooms. The stupidity of the so-called 'professional users' thus already caused a big problem. The events themselves were also nothing more than running through the woods with not a single scene that really evoked an experience of mushroom use. Too bad, but this kind of cheap horror really doesn't bother me, even with a twist at the end not interesting.
