A beautiful film about the rise and fall of the fictional band Flame, played by the band Slade and also fairly modeled after them.

Slade was a good, rough band, but primarily a "fun" band, and that's the crux of this film's commercial failure: this film is actually quite serious.

The four band members basically just play themselves, and they do it more than reasonably well. Noddy Holder is just a natural talent as an actor, but that was of course to be expected.

Ironically, the flop of this film coincided with a failed American adventure, and Slade's own popularity quickly declined after that.

I don't think you necessarily have to be a Slade fan to appreciate this film; in fact, you might as well not be a fan at all.

A film about the rise and fall of the band Flame, which originated with the pop group Slade. The 1970s were a dark time in Great Britain, where strikes, power outages, and a collective musical crisis provided the perfect breeding ground for Slade, who became instantly popular with their hard-hitting sound, indecent lyrics, and so-called Black Country style. The film explores the band's origins, reveals some of the band members' personal lives, and reveals the shady role of agents and managers.

The film is a biopic enhanced with live performances. The acting is provided by the Slade band members themselves. From a realistic perspective, this is understandable. From an artistic perspective, not so. The acting leaves much to be desired. The film's cinematography is equally flawed. It's a very unsettling whole, with scenes seemingly cut short, the story stuttering considerably due to wild time jumps, the abominable sound diminishing the listening experience, the camerawork looking rather amateurish, and many events difficult to interpret due to the sloppy editing. No, not a good film.

Despite all its shortcomings, I enjoyed the film. Pure nostalgia. Purely based on the wonderful feeling I got from reconnecting with the band and the music. The film wonderfully transported me back in time. To the time when I finally said goodbye to the children's song. Incidentally, I once went to a Slade gig. I think I was the youngest audience member. I don't remember much about the performance. I do remember the thrill of seeing the band live, whom I only knew from TV, radio, and record player.
