Nice Comedy / Western with an emphasis on the latter. Was also more or less the first movie with Terence Hill and Bud Spencer, but in a fairly serious role instead of the comic role that they often play well and fun. But in this movie they did well too. The story is quite nice and so are the visuals. They sometimes still broadcast this film on German TV.

I'll probably never become one of the biggest fans of spaghetti westerns, but the Asterix and Obelix of the Wild West quickly make an Italian-made koiboi movie worth watching. The comic note of films with Terence Hill and Bud Spencer often creates a nice light-hearted atmosphere in which it is not so important what exactly happens (storywise) or why it happens; as long as there is some beating and shooting, it is soon fun. Eli Wallach fits very well between the two other protagonists and also knows how to be funny. In short, this is a very entertaining video.

I Quattro dell'Ave Maria is the second part of the trilogy by director Giuseppe Colizzi. Basically, I Quattro dell'Ave Maria is a raw spaghetti western with a grim atmosphere. However, the film offers more space for humorous moments than the first part of the trilogy. In the film, the airy contours of the duo Spencer and Hill are already more visible than in the first part.

The story has a main line, but there are frequent deviations from that main line. The film is episodic in design. The action is full of foolish and doomed to failure actions that, in addition to being grim, also have a light-hearted (sometimes almost slapstick-like) character. The combination worked out well. On the one hand, there's the dust, grime, and gritty action that characterizes the Italian western. On the other hand, there are the quixotes of the characters that counterbalance the grim atmosphere and raw violence.

There is quite a lot of talking in the film. Thanks to Eli Wallach, who occasionally caused me to lose concentration with his verbal interludes. Fortunately, the collapse moments are always positively followed up by atmospheric images of the landscape, by more interesting actions of the other characters and of course by violent and comical action scenes.

Especially the latter does Colizzi well. He prepares the viewer for an exciting and powerful event. To something fateful. To something terrible. Sometimes that does happen. Sometimes something terribly funny happens. The unpredictability works surprisingly well.

I Quattro dell'Ave Maria is a fine spaghetti western. The showdown in particular is very well staged and in my opinion the highlight of the film. Of course, the typical music is not missing. It is pleasantly provided by Carlo Rustichelli. On to La Collina degli Stivali (1969).
