When run-down country singer Mac Sledge wakes up after a drunken stupor in the home of widow Rosa Lee and her son, he tries to get his life back on track by asking her for work and shelter. Partly due to their shared love for music, Mac and Rosa Lee grow closer, so that Mac gradually tries to correct mistakes made and to breathe new life into his career.

Very beautiful film about the seemingly simple life of a former Texan musician. Robert Duvall is both acting and musically very strong and steals the show in a film in which he has left show business behind. He starts a new life that is far from special but therefore so wonderful to see. A life that brings him many good things and when he is confronted with his past, makes him enjoy the beautiful things in life. But that life is not always a bed of roses is just as evident in Tender Mercies.

Slow country drama about a former country singer (Duvall won the Oscar for best actor in 1984) who is looking for peace of mind after a turbulent life. Very human characters. Everything is going very well between Sledge and his new wife. Only he still has to get rid of the burdens from his previous relationships. In my opinion it all went on for too long, but the Texan atmosphere, the music, the moods give the film positive energy. And what a beauty Ellen Barkin is here

Excellent film about an alcoholic former country singer who manages to build a new life. Not really a story, but a film that calmly meanders along with a well-played main character (certainly also because of the beautiful role of Robert Duvall) and in which the atmosphere of Texas and country music come forward well. Some scenes could easily have gotten bogged down in false sentiment, but are here beautiful and subdued (such as the first scene between father and daughter).
