Disappointing film by Fritz Lang with a strange beginning and an all too sugary ending. In between the very edifying message that crime does not pay. It seems unlikely to me that people were waiting for that during the Great Depression. In addition to the disappointing story, the acting is also disappointing. George Raft and Sylvia Sidney can do much better.

George Raft was also roped into a leading role for this third and final collaboration between Fritz Lang and Sylvia Sidney. Judging by these names you would think you are dealing with a thoroughbred crime thriller, but it is certainly not. The film starts with a song by the legendary Kurt Weill – composed especially for the occasion – in which consumer society is mocked, before focusing on the lives of Sylvia Sidney and George Raft – both good in their roles – at the Morris chain store . Thanks to screenwriters Norman Krasna and Virginia Van Upp, we jump from one comic note to the next in the first half of the film, unlike anything I've ever seen in a Lang film. Afterwards, the drama and crime element comes more to the fore, but the dry tongue-in-cheek approach remains (fortunately) intact. Direction and camera by Fritz and Charles Lang (I have not discovered any family ties) are top notch, and are of course an expressionist extension of what we are used to from these gentlemen. It's not because dry humor comes along that the shadows are thrown overboard. Besides the visual elements, the theme of the 'chase through the past' of both Sidney and Raft is very noir. Nevertheless, this film is nowhere to be found in noir lists, and I suspect this is due to the presence of (in my opinion welcome) humor.

You And Me was a flop at the box office and afterwards Fritz Lang was also disdainful about this atypical work of his. I myself enjoyed this. The handling of the 'crime doesn't pay' scene is highly original and hilarious. The nice finale of the film seems to have been invented by Frank Capra.

Perhaps we can conclude that those who like long shadows, Capra and screwball will not regret this forgotten film.

Not the best film for a long time, but this film still manages to hold the attention, the romantic main plot is reasonable, the crime part is a lot less, that also applies to the semi-musical-like tone that is occasionally used and which could have been omitted.
The drama part in which an ex convict only finds out that his brand new bride also has a criminal record
is still the most fascinating plot, but unfortunately too little is done with it
