The Toll of the Sea plot
When Lotus Flower, a young Chinese woman, sees an unconscious man drifting ashore, she gets help. The man is Allen Carver, an American visiting the country. They fall in love and Carver promises to take her to his homeland. But Carver's friends stop him and he returns alone. When the two meet again, much has changed and the reunion proves difficult for them.
