San Guo Zhi Jian Long Xie Jia plot

China, the year 218. Zhao (Andy Lau) heeds the call to fulfill his duty as a soldier in a country that has fallen into the three kingdoms of Wu, Shu and Wei. His rank as a soldier quickly rises due to his courageous conduct. Not long after, he becomes an officer, ordering a huge army to rid the country of the infamous warlords. Zhao's heroic feat to reunite the nation becomes legendary. When a newly crowned king decides that peace can only be achieved by defeating all warlords forever, the now-aged Zhao gears up for one last major campaign. A campaign that pits him against the combative granddaughter Cao Ying (Maggie Q) of the military strategist and politician Cao Cao, whom he once defeated in battle. Based on the novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", a 600-year-old book by author Luo Guangzhong.

Tasteless spectacle.

A rather disappointing vehicle that strives for epicness, but fails precisely because of it. A rather uninteresting story is therefore staged through various time periods, the chaotically told drama artificially inflated by the addition of a shameless Morricone clone, and by featuring characters with sorrowful faces and whispering voices whose only purpose is to force the viewer to participate in this tasteless spectacle. Even the action scenes, choreographed by the legendary Hung, quickly become tedious, as they are repetitive, poorly shot, and anything but original.

Average.

Mediocre Chinese spectacle, visually quite decent, but not particularly interesting. Plenty of action, sure, but most of the fight scenes are poorly shot (lots of aimless slow motion) and poorly edited, largely losing their impact. A shame, because it looks like a lot of money was poured into making this something good. Unfortunately, that only partially succeeds.

And the next Blu-ray this Thursday evening also featured Asian martial arts in the form of this Three Kingdoms, where I'd read that many people were quite enthusiastic about the film adaptation of this specific story. Apparently, this is quite a big deal, but unfortunately, that's knowledge I don't possess, so just like with Ong Bak 2, I went into it with a rather blank slate.

And once again, Andy Lau is joined by a wonderful asset in Maggie Q, where the more personal battles of the previous film have largely been traded for large-scale battlefields. And just like the previous film, the spectacle is impressive, there's plenty of action, the visuals are stunning, and the acting is excellent.

But what else...? The story is completely unrelated, messy, very messy even, the soundtrack is cringe-inducingly melodramatic, the battle montage with its speed-up and slow-down adds nothing and is actually just annoying, a 25-year leap in the main character's life is quite a leap, but above all, it couldn't hold my interest at all, and I had a terrible time watching the whole film. The end result is the same as Ong Bak 2: visually quite okay, but the story is far, far too thin. Not a passing grade.
