A very mediocre film about a complicated love triangle set in London during World War II. Visually, the film isn't bad, with some beautiful shots. The story and characters are disappointing, however. Simply because it just didn't captivate me at all and at times it all became a bit too poetic. This despite the actors, who still put in a good effort.

“Live while you can, live all you can.”

The Edge of Love is truly one of those films saved by its actors. Especially Miller and Knightley, and their bond is its greatest strength. Knightley is always good in these kinds of roles, but Sienna Miller makes the biggest impression. Perhaps a somewhat underrated actress, because in every film she appears in, I find her to be one of the best elements. The story is mediocre, and the male actors are somewhat dull (Murphy is good, but his role is too small). The first half of the film is also clearly stronger than the second half, set in Wales. But the actors keep it entertaining.

Dylan Thomas, but not quite. The other side of the story in Last Call (2020), perhaps a bit earlier, and perhaps a bit too much searching for the exact story it wants to tell. What Thomas himself didn't seem to have much of is precisely what kills the film, it seems.

Knightley is absolutely perfect; she fits the role perfectly, the era, and the 1940s hairstyle suits her perfectly. However, there's that nervous, and therefore fake, smirk that I find detracts from her performance. Thankfully, she seems to be gradually losing that in her recent films.

It's also a fine cast, although Sienna Miller is a bit of a consolation prize compared to Last Call, alongside Romola Garai, and Rhys doesn't even come close to Ifans. Well, I guess he doesn't have the lead role. Murphy, on the other hand, is very good, and a better one could hardly have been found for his role.

I found the footage a bit over-edited, often too dark and too brown in the color grading. And the soundtrack, which is getting quite a stir in the Wikipedia entry, didn't strike me as anything positive. Not really a negative either, so perhaps something to play in the elevator.

All in all, definitely not a bad film. But it's missing a bit too much of the why, or at least that's what I miss.
