'I can not anymore. I can't do better'; a note scribbled on the inside page of a magazine. These are the last words of the South African poet Ingrid Jonker. In the early morning her body is found in a bay near Cape Town. She is 31 years old and leaves behind a small oeuvre of poignant poems. It is 1965. In South Africa the darkest time of apartheid under the Verwoerd regime. The documentary tells the story of her life. Her early childhood on the coast, her father's rejection, her passionate relationship with the writer Andre Brink, her despair about political circumstances and her chosen death.
