A compelling portrait of a person yearning for love. Initially, it's an innocent boy's dream. Later, thanks to a boy (Stan), he becomes obsessed with the female body and "birding."

Josse de Pauw delivered a fantastic performance, especially as an 18-year-old. He lost a significant amount of weight for this role, and the results are stunning. He looks completely different from the third installment of the film. There was considerable doubt about his suitability for the role, but De Pauw's willpower and the fact that wrinkles and other such conditions could be eliminated with acne treatment were the deciding factors.

Visually, the film looks fantastic. Beautiful shots, with the waterfront scenes (the pond, the sea) as highlights. The play of light is magnificent.

It might be interesting to know that the third installment was filmed back in 1985, intended as a short film, "Foggy Night," which was to be included in a compilation film. However, there were many problems surrounding this compilation film, and then the idea arose to turn "Foggy Night" into a feature film. The first two installments were therefore added later.

By the way, pay close attention while watching, the film contains a lot of symbolism and references to other films.

A good film divided into three chapters about a boy/man learning about love and sex. Despite the somewhat nostalgic atmosphere surrounding the film (partly due to the soundtrack), it's a rather sad story about a rather sad character (perfectly portrayed here by Josse de Pauw).

Well, where the Dutch were controversial in the 70s and 80s, Belgium went a step further.

I stumbled across this on Netflix, which is currently all about streaming European classics. It appealed to me.

Crazy Love is a Belgian homage to the stories of Charles Bukowski. I could certainly relate to that. We mainly see elements from Child Among Cannibals here.
The story begins in 1955, and we follow the confident Harry as a 12-year-old in the Flemish countryside. There's absolutely nothing to do in his neighborhood, summer is at its peak, and he can't measure up at home. This changes when he meets an older boy, Stan, from the neighborhood. He takes Harry out to undergo all sorts of sexual experiments, some twisted and others not.

This Stan, however, will continue to shape his sexual perspective on the world. And they don't seem to lose sight of each other. When Harry reaches adolescence, Stan drags him along to the school dance, which Harry decides not to attend. Harry is covered in pimples, and the dance itself seems to only confirm his point. However, this changes when he pulls a bittersweet stunt with toilet paper.

And then, finally... Harry, now all grown up, with his greasy hair and tilted head, almost resembles the Dirty Man from Koten en de Bie, to put it mildly. The sexual experimentation he's now embarking on in his middle years goes far... quite far... It even makes Stan pale. With a bizarre twist.

Yes, this was a nice bit of Flemish cult. Daring, raw, melancholic, and filthy. Indeed, an ode to Bukowski... (Although as far as I know, Bukowski had nothing to do with necrophilia)

4.0*
