The censorship guys were busy. It's still a gritty, violent film. In any case, the stuff goes on a rampage, especially when the machine guns are involved. Bloodless, but also ruthless. Meanwhile, Hawks rushes through his screenplay. Concise, but also on the volatile side, which means that certain proportions do not come out completely. Still, there are some who still manage to make something out of their characters.

Of course with Paul Muni leading the way as a reckless and unguided projectile, obsessed with neon letters. The scene where his over-enthusiastic Tony acquires a new weapon during a gunfight says it all. Poppy is an interesting aunt, Raft and his coin are there for the cool note, only the nonsense brought by the secretary [sic] is a constant thorn in the side. Perhaps the strongest moment of this Scarface is when Lovo is caught lying.

At the time, a film based on the extremely successful gangster films Little Caesar and The Public Enemy. Also a film that, due to its violence, helped to give the Hollywood censorship wings and gives it all the ridiculous story (this is an indictment!) from the beginning. and not long after the Hays era arrived. Just like the remake, the story is just a rise and fall story and that was nothing new even in 1932. But in terms of style and script, the film goes between raw and a bit edgy. There are even some traces of the larger than life Godfather stories here. Sometimes you have to accept some unbelievable things (the turnaround of sister for example after Tony killed her husband). All in all a good movie.
