Even though Marlene Dietrich acts like a wet newspaper at times, you can clearly see that she thoroughly enjoys this role as a semi-wild gypsy. Due to the targeted lighting, her eyes, alternately lustrous and furiously glittering, sometimes seem to glow themselves, accentuating her facial expressions.

The interplay between Dietrich and Ray Milland, who plays with elan and regularly reminded me of Cary Grant, is simply enjoyable! How he ends up with her and she immediately wants to win him over, which he is not looking forward to at all, but which he ultimately cannot resist... is a pleasure to see! The film remains quite light, is still a bit exciting, but does not become too heavy.

the light-heartedness is indeed the most striking aspect of the film, the more serious war matters are sometimes pushed into the background, although they are never really far away.

It was striking that a real Hitler speech was edited at the beginning.
