Aaah Wes Craven movie that always sneaked through.

Started with genre classics such as "Last House On The Left" and "The Hills Have Eyes" and later lead for too much fantasy in horror (Nigtmare On Elm Street) and horror with too much wink (Scream).

And guess what: This film from between "Elm Street" and "Scream" actually turns out to be his best film.

Not that we really find Craven such a very interesting director, but admit this film is really creepy.

Strange voodoo rituals and scary Baby Doc men.

Voices of the (un)dead sounded very much like Diamanda Galas to my ears..not heard wrong in the credits.

Awesome voodoo video. Anyway, something that appeals to me. Pulsating drums, passionate dances and colorfully dressed and painted natives who engage in all kinds of dark practices. Ideal atmosphere for some hallucinatory horror with scary dreams and the like. The one with the candles isn't the only one that's allowed. It's nice that Pullman is leading the charge here, but it is mainly the Haitians that draw the attention. There are some serious creeps in there. In addition to the voice over, there is probably something to criticize and a nightmare that makes you sweat, is all in all not in it, but Craven comes a long way in Haiti. I wanna hear you scream!

Mediocre.

Not full-blooded horror, but it is nice that the well-known zombie scenes are passed and we are presented with the voodoo variant. Not that it is immediately that much better, but at least it is something different than the now well-known zombie mess. Also because a whole part of the film was shot in Haiti.

It's a bit of a shame that Craven has an excess of plot. He tries to build an atmosphere here, but every time it gets a bit exciting or atmospheric, he has to take a step back to help the plot further. And the whole thing about Allan's quest isn't all that interesting, especially when he also has to return to America halfway through. It just takes the pace out of the movie.

Effects are otherwise somewhat charming, although it is also just a bit crappy at times. It certainly doesn't get really scary or nasty, it's too much of a haunted house level for that, but thanks to the setting it's quite nice at times. Oh well, for once it wasn't that bad, but certainly not an outlier in Craven's oeuvre.

2.0*
