The Damned Thing plot

24 years after a family trauma in which his father shot and mysteriously killed his mother, traumatized Kevin is the sheriff of the Texas town of Cloverdale. He knows that the town was violently depopulated in the 1950s by a sudden frenzy. His marriage is under strain, and he lives separately from his wife and son, who are housed in a dilapidated caravan. Kevin himself lives as a hermit in the family's house, which he has loaded with security cameras and telecommunications equipment. But autumn is upon us again, and the frenzy that Kevin has feared all his life seems to be spreading again.

Decent movie. The story premise and the remote-village atmosphere are okay. People going crazy for initially unclear reasons has a certain appeal, as does the gradual transformation of Kevin. The ending, however, is a letdown with the oily monster on screen, makes it a bit laughable, and was completely unnecessary; I would have found just that pool sufficient.
Ultimately, it is entertaining, but there are (many) better films from MoH.

MOH episode 16.

Another fine episode. So, after Hooper's gruesome Dance of the Dead, also in the first season of MOH, a visible improvement. Nice Texan atmosphere, reasonably terrifying, and well acted.

Small 3*.

Despite the generally low ratings, director Tobe Hooper makes a strong comeback in this second season of the Masters of Horror. His previous work Dance of the Dead was a travesty, but The Damned Thing excels at establishing a mysterious, menacing atmosphere. Unfortunately, the limited financial resources available manifest themselves in a somewhat lifeless setting, in which Hooper should have invested more. Furthermore, the characters are not brilliantly acted, but the overarching antagonist easily draws you to the screen as a viewer. Interspersed with a number of effectively explicit images and several haunting mass moments, Hooper demonstrates that he has not lost the art of cinematic direction.
