Crumb plot

"Weird sex · Obsession · Comic books"

A portrait of this underground artist of the 1960s. Not an easy man, often depressed, and with a preference for tall women. A remarkable film in which, in addition to Crumb, family and friends also have their say.

Crumb is about the artist Robert Crumb who makes controversial comics with his cool style and choice of subjects. But it is also a reflection on a dysfunctional family. His two brothers also make frequent appearances in the film, talking about how their family grew up. Not too happy was that due to a tyrannical father and an amphetamine-addicted mother. The three of them also come across as troubled. Of the three sons, Robert Crumb has nevertheless become successful, although I don't think he cares that much. Found it striking how often laughed about anything and everything.

Crumb's comics are also extensively discussed and I found them cool and bizarre at the same time despite the high level of disturbing. I also liked his drawing style. In addition, the comics are coarse in subject matter, but at the same time also pleasantly absurd and above all very imaginative. Of course they must also be interpreted by a number of experts. I didn't think that added much, certainly not that sour stuff of some women.

Outstanding documentary about comic book artist Robert Crumb. Although it is clearly about Robert Crumb, this is also a beautiful family portrait. Eccentric characters with a certain tragedy. Also nice to see how Crumb works. Depicted without any frills, completely in line with the subject. A bit on the long side, but still just 4.0 stars.

Quite different yes. Both in form and in content.

I'm not particularly into comics and don't know a thing about them. Know this man mainly by name.

To be fair, his style is cool, so I already got that.

Furthermore, he is actually quite an annoying man whose history did not interest me very much. His brothers are actually much more interesting (and pathetic).

But the most interesting thing about this documentary is perhaps how people in the 1990s look back on the years when everything was still possible in art and detest that horrible 'current' time in which woke media and people find it scandalous that certain things in art such as racism and mysoginie really can't anymore.

In that respect, it is funny now to see how you can extend all those arguments for and against almost 1 to 1 to 2022.
