Great Western! Has a bit of a TV Western episode feel to it, but that may be partly due to the short running time, as (unfortunately) with most Boetticher Westerns. Nevertheless, a Western (with 'High Noon' and 'Tension at Table Rock' features) to watch more often, with great acting by Scott, John Carroll and Valerie French.

As in 'Ride Lonesome', Boetticher's friend Karen Steele also gets to act.

And -finally- perennial supporting actor Noah Beery Jr. ('Red River', etc.) has more to do, even on a co-star level.

Furthermore, there is a cast of supporting actors who we see in many other Westerns and TV Westerns.

The transfer of the DVD is also very good. as are the extras.

IMDB *8/10.

Beautiful film, this 50s western. One of the collaborations between Budd Boetticher and Randolph Scott, and I have already liked a few of them very much. I initially quickly joined the crowd in underestimating Scott, but I have to adjust my view of him a bit. He is not a very versatile actor, but that is actually only one of the few things that can be criticized about him. He is always his wooden self, but just like with John Wayne, for example, I can actually appreciate that. If his role, like here, is tailor-made for him, he is usually very convincing.

I really like the atmosphere that hangs in these kinds of fifties westerns and Boetticher in particular succeeds very well in creating such an atmosphere. A combination of healthy tension and the occasional joke makes Decision at Sundown a delight to watch. The fact that Scott has a somewhat dubiousrole here also plays a role. He exerts his influence on (the inhabitants of) the town, but ultimately says goodbye with mixed feelings. This means that there is a somewhat deeper layer in this film, but it is not very far-fetched and above all you can simply enjoy everything that is or is not going on in this beautiful town western.

Mediocre story, although they try, but it just doesn't seem very credible, that's how I felt

I had quite a bit of trouble with the plot that everyone was afraid to rebel against Kinbrough, but I constantly had to wonder what they were so afraid of (other than that sheriff).

Scott's feelings of revenge were also very exaggerated, but I found the motivations for this a bit too vague

and with too little explanation and detail.

It's not all bad, the actors play decently, but the story itself doesn't really come across well in my opinion.
