This review is based on both films, as it is essentially one film of over four hours. This film therefore picks up where the previous one left off. It seems that many people familiar with the anime rate this film lower than those who are not. I saw the anime three years ago, and it is by far the best anime I have ever had the privilege of seeing. Strangely enough, I have forgotten a lot of details, and even half of the story. Perhaps that is why I was able to enjoy the film more than most fans.

I find it strange when people say the story isn't good, considering it is a very intelligent thriller that goes quite deep as well. The whole Death Note concept is also original, and it is fantastic to see how Light and L try to eliminate each other. I also didn't think the casting was bad at all; L was actually the highlight. He was portrayed as a bit of a retard, but wasn't he a bit like that in the anime too? On the other hand, he is super smart, of course, and secretly pretty cool with his candy addiction. I wasn't really bothered by Light either, although I have to admit I've kind of forgotten the anime Light. I do know that Light came across as somewhat more convincing to me in the anime. I don't remember exactly what Misa, Sayu, and Naomi were either, but they are portrayed by three beautiful ladies, and that counts a bit too.

Ryuk and Rem were kind of funny, although it took some getting used to when Ryuk first appeared on screen. The looks were good, but the CGI doesn't look very good.

The tension was quite palpable, although that is also because I didn't quite remember the ending. I know, bad for something I consider the best I've ever seen in anime. So this review was written by someone who doesn't have much to compare it to the anime, in terms of story and depth, for example. If I did, this film might have disappointed me as well.

Mediocre again.

I don't care much for the whole Death Note franchise. The idea itself is nice, but they try to make something way too serious out of a story that is essentially quite far-fetched. The booklet is one thing, but all those rules that come with it only make it worse.

They try to extract a few plot twists from it, but they never manage to convince. Quite predictable. Furthermore, the film also lacks a director who really wants to make something of it. Kaneko seems to stick a bit too closely to the storyline; it is all very functional and narrative.

The CG remains a downside as well; the shinugami look really silly. And all things considered, that 2+ hour runtime isn't really justifiable either. It might be slightly faster-paced than the other installments I've seen, but I still don't think it's good. Maybe I should give Sato's version a try after all; that's a director who should actually be able to handle this kind of material.

2.0*

Although the content still has enough substance to at least justify such an absurd running time, the Death Note series reaches an even more questionable level with this second installment. Director Shûsuke Kaneko clings far too much to the animated series and attempts to replicate it almost entirely in terms of acting and execution. The result is quickly a film in which the characters simply don't work; Ken'ichi Matsuyama, in particular, plays a ridiculous figure who cannot be taken seriously for a single moment. Tatsuya Fujiwara is also a strikingly blandly acted character who fails to become interesting anywhere. The ultimate killer is the almost video game-like stature of Ryuk and Rem, demonstrating that this film has anything but stood the test of time. The continuous plot twists and high tempo are positives, but otherwise, The Last Name gradually approaches the level of absolute shoddy work.
