"Two brothers on opposite sides of the law. Beyond their differences lies loyalty."
New York, 1988. The city is rocked by a violent gang war that kills many people, including police officers. Bobby Green is a man who stands between two extremes. He is the manager of a Russian nightclub in Brooklyn where the heavy Russian mobsters are at home. On the other hand, his brother Joseph is a police lieutenant who succeeded their legendary father Burt. Tensions come to a climax and Bobby will have to choose sides one way or the other.

The film isn't always that interesting, but the last 45 minutes make up for it. Very strong acting performance by Joaquin Phoenix. I've seen a few of his movies lately and he's quite impressive. Marky Mark does it as usual, it's definitely not his best part. The brothers' father, played by Duvall, also plays an excellent role. Of course Duvall knows his trade.
Now Gray doesn't really seem to be my favorite director because Lost City of Z was also a disappointment to me. Especially way too long and Gray isn't the strongest at creating atmosphere if you ask me. Here too the story is not always interesting for the entire playing time and certainly the first half hour was quite boring, maybe outside the opening scene. Eva Mendes is immediately sexy ready to turn Phoenix a tongue. I also thought the car chase was very strong, I don't think I've ever seen the way it was filmed before. So We Own the Night is a film with ups and downs but a few strong ups. It gets a good 3* from me because I found the beginning quite weak.
