Nice film in which a pizza baker gets involved with a beautiful girl, who actually turns out to be a tomato. Absolutely silly in several ways, but also original. The humor is pretty bland. The most entertaining moments are the self-conscious scenes in which the low budget is discussed. Also nice to see George Clooney before he went bankable. The final is just a little too long.

I hadn't seen Attack of the Killer Tomatoes yet, but I had a hunch it wouldn't make much of a difference in a killer tomato franchise. And that was right. As is often the case with follow-up films, they show images from the first film. The big difference here is that a complaining viewer then calls, who wonders whether the money had run out, because they only show images from the first film. That immediately sets the tone and you know what kind of movie Return of the Killer Tomatoes is; not just a bad monster movie with a ridiculous 'monster', but also a satire that is regularly reminiscent of Naked Gun or Airplane. In other words; very nice nonsense.

So we have a kind of Dr. Frankenstein in the form of John Astin and his Igor is a handsome man eager to become a newscaster and the tomatoes are Rambos with machine guns. The latter is a funny fact, but it does result in the fact that there is little 'tomato action' in the film. I had in my head rolling tomatoes killing people, but apparently you have to have the first movie for that; there are remarkably few killer tomatoes in this film. Still, the film is hugely amusing, with the heroes Anthony Starke and George Clooney and their relationship with the sexy tomato Karen Waldron. Sometimes the film goes a bit too much over the top, with scenes that are speeded up or people who really make funny faces in the camera, but on the other hand there are a lot of successful jokes. A scene about product placement is hilarious.

3.5 stars.

Well... What was that to me?

And yet the film manages to offer enough entertainment. It's really silly to the power of 10, but there's still something to enjoy. For example, advertising and sponsoring during the film: at a certain moment there is no budget left for the film and the idea is launched to show advertisements for products in the foreground or background during the film. Hilarious ! The ridiculous tune is nice too. The lovely Karen M. Waldron is also a plus. The expectations were different, more actions between the mutated tomatoes and the people. That was actually not the issue here at all. Also funny that George Clooney plays in this. No one could predict his future career then. 4/10
