The Heart of the Matter plot
Harry Scobie is an Assistant Commissioner of Police in Sierra Leone during World War II. When his wife goes on vacation, he falls in love with the widow Helen Rolt, whose husband died on a submarine. Harry wants to divorce his wife and she from him, but because of their Catholic background it doesn't work out. He decides to take rigorous measures to solve this dilemma.
