The Ferryman plot

A group of young tourists sail a boat in the South Pacific Ocean for the vacation of a lifetime. In the middle of the dead calm ocean, in a thick fog, they are on a boat about to collide with evil. Then a sick old Greek man drifts towards them in a stricken yacht. They are in the middle of the ocean, unaided.

A romantic boat trip on a yacht with a group of tourists becomes increasingly less romantic. Director Chris Graham's film takes some time to become a somewhat acceptable horror film. Until then, the viewer is entertained with scenes familiar to horror film fans from other films. Obligatory scenes of dancing, drinking, and enjoying the sun. Scenes that serve to get to know the uninteresting characters better. Thanks to the acceptable acting and the occasional dark humor, we get through this phase of the film. We're just waiting for the ferryman.
The ferryman, who, according to Greek mythology, must be paid with a coin by a deceased person to be transported across the River Styx to the underworld. The film centers on someone who has spent centuries trying to escape the ferryman, repeatedly choosing a different body to house his soul. The ferryman is unhappy about this and has spent centuries searching for the villain. It's an interesting premise for a horror film.
The preconditions are good. The setting on a yacht guarantees little to no escape. Moreover, the space for movement on the yacht is limited. A tense atmosphere develops, further accentuated by a strange mist surrounding the boat. When the action kicks off under these circumstances, it's initially quite exciting. However, there's little variation in the action, and the concept of body swapping is familiar from other films and doesn't provide the film with any surprising twists. As a result, the tension quickly wanes and finally dies down. Even the arrival of Charon couldn't change that.
