A simple drama about a mother and her daughter who try to build a new life. The story is not too special, but thanks to the well-performing cast, the film still stands up. Holmes plays excellently, but she also directs well, the atmosphere surrounding the hopelessness of a mother with financial worries is clearly palpable. Well worth a pass.

Quite nice with a reasonable atmosphere, nice pictures and decent acting (especially the young Owen), but also a huge dragon of a film actually, where you notice that there was a big story in it, but to keep that within two hours, one had to be very had to delete a lot. It becomes a clichéd tear jerker, which is quite easy to look away, but could have been much better. Now it's just not dramatic enough, but it's also not quite comic enough, and therefore it's just nothing of the sort. 2.5*.

“My mom was better at loving men than choosing them. With every new town came a new boyfriend.”

Nice directorial debut from Katie Holmes. All We Had is a predictable film about a mother and her daughter trying to make ends meet, living out of their car. Every time things seem to be going a little better for both, mother Rita messes up again. That daughter Ruthie has so much patience with her mother is admirable, and their scenes together provide the strongest moments. Especially because of the strong acting of Holmes and Stefania Owen. Holmes just doesn't come up with anything new or original, and All We Had fizzles out a bit.
