How cool is it when people step outside the box with the medium of film. It is rarely done, but you can put together a film in such a bizarrely different way than the conventional way. Guy Maddin does that with Brand upon the Brain! by making a silent film with a narrator and a story that most resembles a long drawn-out dream. Bizarre events, illogic and repetitive images are fired at the viewer. The pace is good and visually there is a lot to experience.

I was reading what I had written about another Guy Maddin film, My Winnipeg, and what is written there also applies to this film. In terms of atmosphere and style it is more or less the same. You could call it a weakness that it does not vary much, but watching such an extremely special film a second time was fine with me. By the way, I recommend Tuvalu to fans of this. That is also a similarly bizarre film with a unique character.
