"A fun fair behind the dikes"

The Dutch do strange things with their free time. We see the places where the average Dutch person recreates: Bataviastad, the Efteling, the Libelleweek somewhere in the polder, Gay Pride and the Prinsengracht concert. The film portrays the participants and organizers of the events. The common thread is the group of itinerant Chinese tourists, who watch all events with the same unsuspecting amazement. Nice moments and nice characters but it does not move, it is indeed perhaps a bit too clinical, distant and cynical what Van Erp presents here. Still a few really golden but toe-curling things and characters, of course especially that fantastic slogan that keeps coming back and also the Batavia man on his lookout post. That is what you watch for in the end, I am that honest.

Good documentary about the leisure activities of the Dutch in 2006. Walking from the gay pride to the Efteling to Bataviastad. The documentary lacks some structure and could perhaps have been a bit shorter, but it is fun. Fun because it is all very clumsy and especially so recognizable. A narrow 3.5 stars.

I couldn't really relate to this. Yes, it was typically Dutch in many ways, but I wasn't blown away by it. I might as well have watched an episode of Man Bites Dog. I generally thought they were fairly 'normal' average people. Okay, a bit common then. But not very striking, with the exception of the gay pride participants. The Chinese tour bus was able to keep me somewhat focused, but they just aren't Dutch. I can actually only remember one bit that was reasonably funny, and that was when that event organizer called his mother in that parking lot and tried in vain several times to end the conversation. No, this really wasn't it, but I guess I'm not 'Dutch' enough for that.
