Steve (Matthew Broderick) is a father who lives on the outskirts of town and is an avid Christmas fan. He leads a well organized and fully planned life. His new neighbor, Buddy (Danny DeVito), is the complete opposite of Steve: he has a big personality and also big dreams, which he always tries to turn into reality. Buddy's latest dream is to hold a grand exhibition of luminous Christmas decorations, which can even be seen in space. This wish turns Steve's well-ordered and disciplined life into a chaotic nightmare. Buddy's house is overflowing with party lights in the weirdest designs, intricate patterns and quilting that just keeps on growing. This gives Steve a hunch: he will at any cost to thwart Buddy's plan, or even surpass him.

Very thin comedy.
It doesn't help anyway that both Broderic and DeVito are pretty unbearable here. Both are very annoying in their roles, their feud could also be stolen from me completely. In terms of setup, just not at all successful, there is of course not much more in these kinds of videos.
Also some annoying supporting roles, but you can't put everything on the actors. The humor is also quite annoying. It's a bit like watching Home Alone in the '00s, but with only adults. No idea who thought that was a good idea.
The director didn't seem to care. Functional control and that's where it ends. A very mediocre comedy, which tries to disguise itself as a Christmas movie with some Christmas decorations. Not a movie I ever hope to watch again.

Deck The Halls is a typical American Christmas movie that is full of clichés.
Matthew Broderick plays the head of a frumpy middle-class family with a bored daughter, a depressed son and an over-enthusiastic wife (played by the ever-joyful Kristin Davis). Broderick doesn't seem to feel like it and comes across as boring as the character he plays. As a viewer you can build little sympathy for this. Then Danny DeVito is a lot more successful, but we have also seen him in better shape. The actresses Davis and Chenoweth are just for show.
Like many Christmas movies, everything is very sweet and completely predictable. There is no surprise in this film and it has not become very memorable either. The film had a relatively large budget (51 million dollars, no idea for what?), but was a major flop for studio 20th Century Fox, as they did not even manage to recoup its budget.

Entertaining nonsense.
From time to time, movies like Deck the Halls are the movies you need to get through a rough day. Very innocent cinema that is only made to entertain and convey a good feeling. Not that it is therefore brilliant as a film, but I thought it was a pleasant, sometimes warm film that I had a good time with.
Both Broderick and DeVito play roles that I can appreciate. They both fit very well into their characters, especially DeVito schmier. The side characters are a bit more boring but are necessary for the moral of the story. The content is paper thin. It's an explosive depiction of a neighbor's quarrel and not much more, but it's amusingly worked out.
The jokes themselves miss the mark too often to be really successful, but luckily the film can draw some strength from other parts. I love the decoration with the lights on the house. Millions must have gone there. I also liked the cheerful finale. Not brilliant or terribly innovative, but it provides the right feel-good feeling.
Perhaps it could have been edited a little more fresh, because the direction allows the story itself to do the talking. Whitesell doesn't seem to add much as a director, Broderick and DeVito filled in the film themselves. The result is a cozy film that fits in well with the other Christmas films. Not brilliant, but I finished the film with a smile and that's what it seems to be about. Too bad I only smiled and didn't laugh.
