Fourteen Hours plot
"A new element in screen suspense"
Robert Cosick is a desperate young man who has a bad relationship with his parents. Moreover, he thinks that his girlfriend does not love him. He decides to commit suicide and crawls on the ledge of a skyscraper in New York with the intention of jumping. Police officer Charlie Dunnigan tries to convince him to abandon his plan.

Handsome thriller in which director Hathaway succeeds in keeping the suspense for an hour and a half, thanks to the beautiful roles of Richard Basehart and Paul Douglas. Also interesting because of the occasionally spectacular images from above (the falling cigarette!) and the nice supporting roles of Debra Paget, Jeffrey Hunter and the debuting Grace Kelly.

Not entirely credible, but entertaining drama about Robert Cosick [Richard Basehart], a confused man who contemplates committing suicide by jumping off the ledge of a hotel and the simple traffic cop Charlie Dunnigan [Paul Douglas], who is not only the first on the scene but also turns out to be the only one Robert wants to talk to. It's up to Charlie to keep Robert talking and find out the reason for his act of desperation. However, John Paxton's screenplay also shows how the media in the 1950s do everything possible for that one image, that one sound fragment, and how all the public attention has a profound effect on the lives of passers-by.
Richard Basehart is OK, but completely outplayed by Douglas who is nothing short of perfect as the earthy, helpful cop who's been thrown into a situation he's totally untrained for. Agnes Moorehead and Robert Keith are fine as Robert's bickering parents, and the film also features two movie stars in the making. Jeffrey Hunter (in his second film role) plays a young spectator and Grace Kelly in her feature debut already shows that she has what it takes to become one of the biggest movie stars of her generation, despite her small role.

Great psychodrama with a great leading role for Richard Basehart as a doubter. As you can often expect from Henry Hathaway, it is a film for which the necessary research has been done to make it all seem realistic. At the end credits, the police forces are thanked again for their cooperation.
It is amusing how this very old film hints at the media circus of that time.
In accordance with the film noir of the time, the plot has a lot to do with Freudian psychology, mother and father complex, etc. And they ensure that the theory fits the situation like a glove. Is that why it's a film noir? Not necessarily, but many films from that time stir in the same pot.
It's also nice how the side plots are intertwined with the main plot that takes place high above the ground all the time.
Finally, it is worth mentioning the supporting role of Grace Kelly and it is also her debut.
