Reportedly, writer/director Silberling was inspired by the murder of his then girlfriend Rebecca Schaeffer in 1989. I have been unable to find much of the course of events surrounding that murder. Silberling comes with a dash of humor here and there, a dash of romance and the occasional drama. The whole thing is a hodgepodge, in which I have not been able to discover much line.

Fortunately, the film is saved a bit by the excellent roles of Susan Sarandon and Ellen Pompeo, who apparently could act well even before her Grey's Anatomy period. The playing of Dustin Hoffman and Jake Gyllenhaal in this film did not appeal to me.

This is partly a setback.

Well done: great cast, good script, fantastic music. All the ingredients are there in a good dose: comedy, drama, psychology... funny, serious, moving... I would like to see a film like this more often!

I largely agree with the comment above me and some other users who give the film about the same score. Moonlight Mile itself is a well-executed film, but at the same time I sometimes felt like watching a pilot episode of a soap opera. The balance between comedy and drama is a bit strange and certainly not balanced. Also Joe's plea in court is ultimately not entirely convincing. Still, the interplay of Jake Gyllenhaal, Susan Sarandon and Dustin Hoffman is fun. The mutual chemistry is fine, although I've seen better both Gyllenhaal and Hoffman. Some subcutaneous tensions and confrontations keep things interesting and it also helps enormously that the information is interesting. The film managed to keep me on a leash effortlessly, but I also forgot about it in no time.

3*
