Richard Crenna buys an old mansion, renovates it with the help of his wife and friends, and should have left it alone. The house hides a terrible secret, and the revelation of that secret causes a lot of misery among the group. What follows is a somewhat flat ghost story that is reasonably atmospheric and succeeds in creating a certain goodwill.

Crenna is an atheist. And that provides enough fodder for the hellish forces to lash out at the doubting Thomas and his entourage. This evil approach results in an entertaining film with the slashing practices of the devilish powers as highlights. The depiction of it is subdued. The slashing is not depicted in a spectacularly bloody way, but is surrounded by suspense and in this way manages to generate a certain degree of tension.

That the characters make it very easy for the evil powers to have their way with them is indicative of the superficial coloring of the characters. They run around wildly and disorganized, occasionally shouting some nonsense and sometimes falling prey to evil in a beautiful way. These are entertaining moments and welcome distractions from all that running, trotting and obligatory bleating of the characters. Behavior that is sometimes a bit too much of a good thing.

The finale, which is a meeting between the characters of Richard Crenna and Donald Pleasance, is of a theosophical nature and quite amusing. Pleasance has donned an obscure white suit and instead of a frightening one, he makes a grotesque, not to say laughable impression. Pleasance colours the finale with his appearance, which I experienced as very humorous. Hopefully that was also the intention. In any case, I took it that way and said goodbye to evil and the film with a laugh.
