Pushover plot

"This year the great suspense drama is PUSHOVER The Story of temptation"

A bank robbery yields a group of criminals $210,000. Shortly afterwards, Lona McLane (Novak), the girlfriend of one of the robbers, has a heated affair with Paul Sheridan (MacMurray). When she finds out that Paul is a police officer, she tries to save herself by bribing him. That turns out to be very easy. But before he gets his hands on the bribe, he is involved in a complex spy operation. Paul becomes more and more involved, until there is no way out.

Film noir in which the femme fatale claims a very central role.

A first-class detective who turns his career upside down for the sake of money and a beautiful woman, role well played by a young Kim NovaK (her first major film).

Although the tension is systematically increased, it is not all great.

Good film in which two cops keep an eye on a bank robber's sweetheart. A good story that is well put together with many developments following fairly quickly. Pretty exciting towards the end. Well cast and one of Kim Novak's first roles.

Sometimes Pushover is dismissed as a variant of Double Idemnity. It is sometimes considered a minor precursor to Rear Window. Which came out just a little later. Sometimes it is mainly discussed as the debut of KIm Novak. But it can very easily stand on its own. And it's a rock solid Noir. One that I think should be in lists more often.

I saw Drive a Crooked Road by Quine last year. A fascinating film with an atmospheric direction and very strong acting performances. That is also the case here and the film is even better. The great Fred Macmurray plays a cop. On the surface, it looks like he's the innocent cop seduced by the debuting(!) Novak. But in the details you see that is different. It is a film that seeks more nuance. The cops are definitely not that innocent and very manipulative and very misogynistic. Who manipulates whom?

That plus wonderful lighting in the dark, the rainy streets. The getting further and further out of control of the plans to make off with the money. This is a delicious noir and one of the better this month. And certainly one of the less celebrated of the really good movies.
