What is particularly strong about the film is the director. She makes it a beautiful visual gem. Beautiful images that make you think about certain things. The acting is also good, although not all characters.

In any case, you have to read between the lines with this film. The director does not necessarily try to explain the mutual relationships with dialogues, but with atmospheric images, scenes between the characters, reactions, facial expressions, ... As a result, it takes a while before everything falls into place. Something that has its pros and cons. For example, in the beginning it is still unclear what the correct relationships are between the characters.

To come back to the omission of some dialogues, I must say that sometimes it really does add value. For example, the characters do read the letter, but you only see their reactions while reading. The letter is not read aloud or in loud thoughts, as would be done in many other films. The information flows naturally back into the story.

You do get a fairly melancholy and dark film across the board, which sometimes gets a bit much. Even though that is of course the intention in this film (that dark, not that it becomes too much of course).

Definitely a movie that needs to be seen more. And in my opinion even better than before.

Leopold confirms her talent here, but makes some wrong decisions compared to Guernsey. For example, there are too many characters in this film, while her style fits so much better with following one or two people. Furthermore, the film also misses someone like Maria Kraakman who really pulls you into the screen. I therefore agree with the people who thought it was all too distant. Too bad, but I will continue to follow Leopold.

Looks like a film, especially in the first part, where it was forgotten to edit it properly.

This (probably wanted) technique as well as the many silent and meaningless scenes increase the unpleasant atmosphere that prevails in the family.

This is a film that will certainly never become popular, although it must be said that once you get IN the film, there are still a few, rare, beautiful moments to experience.

But it takes concentration and courage...
