Kaagaz Ke Phool plot

Kaagaz Ke Phool begins with the last seconds in the life of a famous director, played by Guru Dutt himself. Then the film jumps to the beginning of his career, when he meets Shanti who is then just an insecure debutante in the film world. His growing fascination with her makes him decide to cast her in his films. Her increasing independence and status, its decline into mediocrity and the ever-present tension between their personal and professional goals are then addressed in the film.

Slightly less than Pyaasa and a quite depressing film, if you take into account that this is an autobiographical story and Dutt committed suicide a few years later, because he apparently had no interest in life anymore.

Dutt paints a nice portrait of the film world here and it is clearly made clear here that life as a director is not always roses and moonshine. As always in these types of Indian films, there are also several songs throughout. I didn't think they were very good this time.

The direction itself is not bad and the drama is also quite well done, but I thought it all dragged a bit towards the end. Pyaasa is slightly better, just like most other Indian films I have seen so far from this period.

2.5*
