Les Fruits de la Passion plot

"The story of "O" continues in the Orient."

We are in China, 1920s. The streets are noisy, Communist rebels everywhere conspire to try to fend off the foreign powers. People live in fear. Nevertheless, wealthy older Englishman Sir Stephen (Klaus Kinski) decides to take his lover to China: a beautiful young Eastern European girl known as "O". The girl is so incredibly in love with Stephen that she will do anything, absolutely anything for him. To test her love, Stephen demands that she become a prostitute at the local brothel. "O" accepts this proposal. The rules in the brothel are simple, but strict: all the wishes of the customers are respected, otherwise it will cost you food and your wages.

Not bad. Beautiful nude scenes and that "O" with her sad look in her eyes is quite a beautiful woman, especially in her Eva costume. I can hardly imagine that she was so incredibly in love with that Stephan (Klaus Kinski). She never laughed. She only did that when she made love to that young rebel, who eventually had to pay for it with his death because Stephan could not tolerate it. Furthermore, the dire poverty in China in the twenties of the last century was beautifully depicted in this quite atmospheric film. People apparently did everything to be able to provide for themselves, if necessary working in a brothel where they had to submit to the most absurd perversions if the customer asked for it. One of the most hilarious scenes I found was the one with the man who had to play the dog.

3.5*

Well, it's not all that much. A bit of a strange plot, yes, but no less interesting because of that, in which a rich Englishman gets the idea to force unconditional love from his beloved by putting her in a brothel. And he also did not leave himself unproven as a customer under the watchful eye of his beloved.

Oh, the bizarre name of the beautiful woman agrees with everything, although her face often spoke volumes. That not everything would end well as expected, was predictable, which made me find the plot quite intriguing. In addition, a number of nice influences from China somewhere at the beginning of the 20th century. The seedy cafes, streets and brothels were cleverly depicted. In terms of atmosphere and setting, therefore also reasonable. Cinematically quite outdated film. In terms of eroticism it was also quite okay.

Visually nice and also atmospheric, but content-wise a bit strange and the film could not really captivate me. The acting is also a bit theatrical (Kinksi) or flat (Illiers) which means that the characters never really came to life. All in all a film that is a bit long, sometimes messy, certainly towards the end where more plot elements are added that do not really fit. 2.0*.
