An ambitious young man, Söfren, is chosen to become a pastor in a small rural village. Although he is betrothed to Mari, whom her father allows him to marry only if he becomes a minister, according to the custom he must marry the wife of the previous deceased vicar, Dame Margarete. Söfren agrees to this in order to be able to hold the position of pastor. He does bring Mari into the house on the pretext that she is her sister, in order to have her close to him. Söfren hopes that Dame Margarete will die soon and tries to lend a hand in this herself.
