Daring film by Pal Gabor about the drill methods at a communist cadre school in the late 1940s. Made in 1978 when the communist party in Hungary was still high and dry. May be accepted by Gabor's apparently neutral stance, but it also shows how communist brainwashing, complete with incomprehensible party jargon, self-criticism and harsh assessments, goes hand in hand with the idealism of the future cadres who really thought they were working on a new man in a new society. We may find that strange now, but Hungary came as a feudal state, ruled by a wealthy upper class, and with a population in deep poverty, from very far.

Vera Pap as the girl Vera carries this film effortlessly. Despite the 'heavy' subject, the film doesn't feel heavy because the emphasis is on the girls' experiences, Vera's love for one of the teachers and also makes it clearly visible that people don't let themselves be squeezed into a straitjacket. The result of this became clear during the Hungarian uprising of 1956, which was bloodily put down by the Russians. Then the Hungarian people had to wait another thirty years for the liberation from that yoke. And how is it now? Another dictator who can't handle democracy. From a right-wing dictatorship, to a left-wing dictatorship and now again a right-wing dictatorship. Poor people.
