Sixty Six plot

"it's his year, and he wants it back."

In the summer of 1966, the "World Cup" grips all of England. One of the few boys who doesn't care about it is twelve-year-old Bernie. He especially looks forward to his Bar Mitsva, the day when he becomes a man. When the family business goes bad, the importance of his Bar Mitsva fades into the background. To make matters worse, it also appears to coincide with the final of the World Cup. The most important day in Bernie's life seems to be a failure.

I know Paul Weiland from the excellent "Roseanna's Grave" and I also liked this charming comedy.

Tasty and spiky details from everyday life, a guy who doesn't leave you unmoved, Eddie Marsan, excellent as always, a strong link to the '66 World Cup and, as a downside, a somewhat forced happy ending.

Charming, sweet film with that typical combination of humor and drama that the English are so good at. A little too bland and sentimental here and there, but the script clearly has its heart in the right place and the characters are very endearing. Nice snapshot of the times too. Richard Curtis is the executive producer and you quickly see the similarities with his own work.
