La Tarantola dal Ventre Nero plot

"With needles dipped in deadly venom the victims are paralyzed - so they must lie awake and watch themselves die!"

Inspector Tellini investigates a series of crimes where all the victims were paralyzed with their abdomens cut open with a sharp knife, in the same way a tarantula is killed by a black wasp. As the victims continue to fall, Tellini heads to a seaside resort where all the victims have something to do with in one way or another.

Quite a messy story with a lot of characters to make the whodunnit more interesting, but the killer was actually very predictable. The cast is okay: Giancarlo Giannini plays the role of inspector quite nicely and there is plenty of feminine beauty present. However, the film did not appeal to me because of the messy story, as mentioned, but the kills and gore also seemed monotonous and weak. As far as the atmosphere and the characteristic giallo scenes are concerned, I was still a bit disappointed. 5/10

I looked again, but 11 years later - and dozens of better gialli later - this one is disappointing. Quite slow, little tension and visually quite messy, no nice flow. You can already see the denouement coming from the opening scene. Only the experimental Morricone soundtrack is really worth it.

Go from 3.5* to a tight 2.5.

This is modeled on key works by Mario Bava and Dario Argento. The title also says something. Following Argento's animal trilogy, it was a short-lived hype in the giallo in the early 1970s to include an animal name in the title. Furthermore, it often did not matter much and some symbolism was dragged in. That is also the case here now, but it is part of the fun. Furthermore, there is a typical giallo killer around, although this time he wears latex instead of leather gloves. The murders are sophisticated and the settings are stylized. There are more than enough acting performances. Of course there are some pretty ladies in the defense, including a contribution from Barbara Bach (Mrs. Ringo Starr for Beatles fans). I especially liked Giancarlo Giannini as a doubting commissioner. Direction and photography are also of a high standard. And all this is finished with one of the best giallo scores by Il Maestro Morricone. Classic giallo.
