Bad film that does not exceed the level of an average soap opera. Superficial, clichéd, oversimplified. The film does not do justice to the authenticity and tragedy of the artist Brood. A soulless imitation is given out that makes no sense. Rarely seen such an empty caricature of an artist as in this film. The excellent acting of, say, Marcel Hensema no longer does anything about that.

Wild Romance is about Herman Brood as an iconic junkie who relishes the anesthetics, the groupies and the unbreakable friendship with Koos van Dijk. Marcel Hensema is in good shape as the Groningen dry-kloot, who uncomfortably tries to find his way in the decadent derailments of his musical friend. Daniël Boissevain doesn't look like the amiable cuddle junkie, but he manages to capture the vibe of a clichéd self-defeating rock 'n roll star. Visually it is a chaotic mess of skewed camera shots and bright color filters. Exciting-looking emptiness. A good biopic shows a historical icon from a different side. A mediocre or bad biographical film only confirms already existing clichés. Therein lies the biggest flaw of this predictable tribute: Herman Brood remains a caricature Koefnoen type without psychological layers.

Nice film about Herman Brood who manages to break through musically with his Wild Romance. This biopic about Herman Brood focuses on the beginning of his musical career and the relationship with his manager (who here almost plays a second leading role). All fairly light-hearted. Of course full of sex, drugs and rock 'n roll. Daniël Boissevain and Marcel Hensema are pushing it hard, but that is allowed here.
