Mary Smith (Merle Oberon) is not allowed to go to any nightclubs or other places of entertainment because it could damage her father's political career. Yet she and two maids go out with some rodeo riders. Mary tells her date 'Stretch' Willoughby (Gary Cooper) that she is a chambermaid and was abused by her father. After Stretch and Mary fall in love and get married head over heels, Mary finds herself in trouble: the lies she told Stretch and the secret marriage her father is not supposed to know.
