This television production gives John Carpenter the creative freedom that seems to be denied him in his new studio productions in recent years. Back to the game with other dimensions with other creatures influencing our reality. Just before this film I saw the similar 'In the Mouth of Madness' (1994) and then it becomes apparent that Carpenter had less budget at his disposal here. For the most part Cigarette Burns consists of bad acting people who propel the plot with plot exposition. It's only at the end that Carpenter pulls out his sadistic bag of tricks to give us what we've been yearning for all along. It's a tasty climax, but the feeling remains that the iconic director was short of resources to match his past highs.

The first of the Masters of Horror series I see, and it didn't disappoint. Despite the short running time, it turned out to be quite a decent movie. I think it's more of a thriller with horror elements, and the latter especially applies to the ending, but the atmosphere is more than fine. Incidentally, the acting was really lousy, but all in all a good enough.

Well, it's not often that I'm really curious about the sequel of a movie – even with a thriller you know that it will end well and that the final chase or final fight will end in favor of the hero so that I won't be particularly "thrilled", but with this film I was still anxiously watching what the filmmakers would come up with in order to justify the increasing expectations. And the ending may not have been the superlative I was hoping for, but I wasn't disappointed either, and I think that's a lot. In the beginning I was a bit afraid of a Angel heart-esque punch line (that Bellinger himself would be Backovic who orders Kirby to track down the film of his –Kirby's– own death or something like that), and also what PEN15 writes in the last sentence of his previous post I took into account, but the plot goes in a slightly different direction and kept me long effort. Also happy with finally a good, serious and really creepy role for Udo Kier, who also gets a fitting ending. (By the way, the fragments we get to see from La fin absolue du monde reminded me personally of the flashes we see in Event horizon when we know where the spaceship is coming from. title comes from.)
