Old Joy is a soothing film that largely sets the tone with beautiful visuals and fitting music.

When I started this film, I initially thought there would be quite a lot of dialogue. This was a bit disappointing, but because the film was shot beautifully and calmly, it still manages to hold my attention well enough.

The characters are interesting enough to follow and often do not say things with words, but clearly with certain facial expressions.

Old Joy is a relaxing, short film that doesn't rely much on explosive dialogue, but instead makes extensive use of very beautiful and soothing nature shots.

Oh dear.

The somewhat dull plot description above makes the film seem much more exciting than it actually is. It is little more than "two old friends go sit in nature for a night." The "awkward silences" that apparently form the core are hard to grasp. I found the acting particularly poor and awkward, which means that attempted bit of drama never really takes hold.

The two characters failed to captivate at all; the contrast between them is one to slowly lull you to sleep. That might have succeeded without the terrible score, the painfully failed attempts at any cinematic revival, and the dull dialogue and monologues; it would have made the film somewhat bearable. Especially the bit about the Indonesian lady in the supermarket is a highlight in all its idiocy.

Ugly close-ups, lifeless framing, colorless scenery, clumsy acting, forced slice-of-life elements, and above all, two unspeakable losers I would have thrown right out of my car. And then some endless strumming soundtrack, as it should be, of course.

Reichardt is going back into the drawer.

I have only just seen the breakthrough film by one of my favorite directors. Much of what works well in her later films is present here as well. Despite its length, the film feels more like a short film than a feature film, also in terms of quality. Reichardt would go on to further perfect this in her films later on.
