"Unrest in Peace"
Harris, Kira and Sid are three old friends who reunite after years at their friend Devin's funeral. During a night full of booze, the three decide to say goodbye to their deceased friend. In the cemetery they find a card with a spell. They read to him aloud, dancing drunkenly on the graves. What they do not know is that an ancient curse is set in motion. Before long, Harris, Kira and Sid fall prey to vengeful ghosts with one goal: to drag the grave robbers to the realm of the dead. Their only hope is two paranormal investigators. Can they stop evil?

I read so much here that people thought the beginning was good and less and less towards the end. Other than the last few minutes, I have rather the opposite. I find the first half slow and boring. Invisible entities can't really upset me, but gradually it gets better and that childish dancing on graves has quite interesting sequels. It will never be a great movie. The whole looks too cheap for that and the acting isn't exactly exceptional either. Not bad by the way. Ultimately, The Gravedancers is quite watchable. When the ghosts are more or less introduced after which the cauldron erupts, it really gets fun. The Gravedancers does well as an average horror film. The ending is (visually) disappointing.

The Gravedancers I've seen in the past. Thought I liked it then I watched it again. Actually, on second viewing, no more than a mediocre film. I actually quite disliked it. It's not bad but certainly not good.

This film about three friends who accidentally awaken and terrorize the ghosts of an underage pyromaniac, an ax murderess and a rapist is beautiful old school horror. Exploding light bulbs, ominous phone calls, strange noises and bizarre appearances. Below that is a sinister score of piano and violin. The film is well put together and tight.
The special effects are good. I didn't have much faith in that beforehand, given the moderate budget. Not disappointed in that regard. Great atmosphere too. Very dark and disturbing. An atmosphere that lingers for a long time in a film and fortunately is not interrupted too rigorously by too much lightheartedness in the form of funny actions or one-liners. Those things are used in moderation and modesty.
Unfortunately, not everything works. The story is somewhat simple and does not require much brain power. But it flows nicely and generates a pleasant ghostly tension. The real disappointment is in the cast. The actors are just not good. They struggle through the film dull and stiff. Director Mike Mendez should have been a little tighter on that. Perhaps it was also a hopeless task. At least it kind of detracted from the fun rest of the movie.
The Gravedancers therefore has some flaws, but the main thing is that the film is a very nice and atmospheric old school horror.
