"This summer there's no better place to find yourself."
In the summer of 1942, after the death of their mother, two Jewish boys are placed with their grandmother in the New York district of Yonkers, so that their father can earn a living. Grandma appears to run her house with such a hard hand that all her children have been knocked over. Aunt Gert has a speech impediment, Uncle Louie became a gangster out of resistance to his upbringing and Aunt Bella never grew up.
