The Stepford Wives plot

"Something strange is happening in the town of Stepford."

Bobbie and Joanna have recently moved to Stepford and marvel at the women in the village: they slavishly do the housework, cleaning and washing as if it were a blessing. The friends investigate and make a gruesome discovery... Based on the novel of the same name by Ira Levin (Rosemary's Baby).

I've also read Ira Levin's book, and we saw the movie at school. I'm not really into reading, but I thought this book was pretty good. The movie was a bit dull, but it also has some great music and some nice scenes.

3 stars.

I've seen this film before, but even after a second (or third?) viewing, I'm still not sure what to make of it. I find it an unremarkable, rather dull story that practically gives away the punch line from the first encounter with the new neighbor. The film is enlivened by a whole parade of sharply coiffed, fashionably dressed women. There's nothing wrong with that, but it's not enough to keep me captivated for almost two hours. The charming performance of the mischievous Paula Prentiss is, in my opinion, the only thing worth mentioning.

An uneasy, yet effective thriller about a town near New York where the women are remarkably docile and submissive. The plot starts slowly and there's not much to be creepy about, but the gradually escalating atmosphere of paranoia is cleverly captured, and the cast and design are excellent. Based on the novel of the same name by Ira Levin.
