A very strange, yet incredibly well-made film. The mysteries pile up, there's a flurry of completely deranged characters (Charles Janssens as the wild man Siegfried ),... Don't expect a clear-cut answer about the mysterious Joachim Stiller after this film. You'll be left with even more questions than before.

A truly brilliant film (I was only bothered by the fact that half of Antwerp speaks Dutch) with excellent performances and almost masterful direction. Everything is bathed in such a mysterious, brooding atmosphere... Fantastic film!

The arrival of Joachim Stiller was a regular fixture on reading lists when I was graduating high school in 1977. A messiah story, we all thought. A vague story, but something with a messiah. I don't think anyone really understood the story. Now that I recently saw a TV interview with the author after watching this film adaptation, I suspect he himself doesn't understand a thing.

No, he prefers not to write from a predetermined plan. The story evolves as he writes. He wanted to do something with horror, that strange Stiller as a practical joke by friends of Freek Groenevelt, but gradually... gradually it grew from nonsense to more nonsense, so to speak.

Harry Kümel's astonishing achievement is to transform incoherent, aimless ramblings into an effective thriller. From the gorgeous, useless road workers to the ultimate comet, he skillfully builds suspense. He imbues Antwerp's city center with a wonderfully mysterious atmosphere.

The film adaptation is contemporary, and early on, Willeke van Ammelrooy gets to show her breasts—what else could that possibly be? Fortunately, the director holds back. Nudity isn't avoided, why should it be? Nor is it exaggerated.

Aside from a few imperfections—why are half a tribe of people carelessly gathering in a deserted factory for a dubious vernissage while the whole world knows a potentially devastating comet is careening past—I wasn't bored for a second. For a film well over two and a half hours long, that's quite an achievement. With thanks, kudos, and respect to the exemplary actors, none of whom were out of place.
