Il Portiere di Notte plot

"The Most Controversial Picture of Our Time!"

In 1957, a Jewish woman sees the officer of the concentration camp in the night porter of a Viennese hotel, who forced her as a 15-year-old into a sado-masochistic relationship in which she gradually became a willing partner. Since both never got rid of that memory, they resume the relationship.

Seen it a long time ago, and I thought it was time to watch it again. The first hour was a bit disappointing - sometimes quite woodenly played, sloppy camera work. That is much stronger in the second half. Then it also starts to become clear that the film has a bit more to offer than just the shocking fact. Beautiful scenes with Rampling and Bogarde who are perhaps playing the best role of their careers here. And otherwise the most talked about.

Too bad the sound is so cringe-inducingly bad. It’s really distracting.

For a long time it is not very clear whether this is meant seriously or not. A confrontation between a Nazi and a Jewess could be the subject of a drama, and with actors like Rampling and Bogarde you initially get that impression. Then it goes in a completely different direction and it turns out to be "Nazisploitation", a genre based on sadomachostic fantasies with German officers. Strange, but funny for once.

Daring film with a repulsive subject, although that may sound more appealing than this arty farty Italian drama actually is. The event has certainly not stood the test of time well. Especially the group of Nazis that gather around lead actor Dirk Bogarde is laughably caricatural. The distorted sexual relations between Bogarde and Charlotte Rampling are better portrayed, but that unfortunately does not make the film any less boring.
