Sunday was a bit of a let-go with a little movie marathon, which I managed to start around 11:00 AM. The first film was this Nine Men on Netflix, which initially didn't look great but turned out to be quite decent.

The plot is simple, involving Sergeant Watson, fed up with his troops' complaints back at the barracks, and telling them about the "real deal." The sergeant has already experienced his fair share of trouble in the African desert, Libya to be precise. After a breakdown and a German aircraft attack, the sergeant and his platoon find themselves in dire straits, lacking transportation, ammunition, and food. Fortunately, after a short detour, they find an abandoned bunker, as it's far too small for a fortress. It's not a minute too late, with a wounded man, the troops at their wits' end, and a sandstorm on their heels.

But it soon becomes clear that the enemy is also in the vicinity and apparently wants to enter the bunker. Why is a mystery, as there's no water source. It can't possibly be a key strategic point in the middle of the desert, and with only troops in the bunker and no other support around it, the enemy should also realize they have nothing to fear and can bypass it. Anyway, the bunker becomes a "tug of war," and that's nicely portrayed with the necessary skirmishes, an antique armored car, and of course, the battle against the elements and the shortage of supplies.

Nine Men isn't great, of course, but considering it's set in 1943, it's still quite doable, and the wooden acting, the perfunctory backgrounds, and a certain repetitiveness in shouts, screams, and phrases are easily forgiven. It's tame, very tame, but quite satisfying with a little goodwill.
