Teacher's Pet plot

"A tantalizing, titillating tale of a love triangle that leads to tangled trouble. An airy, very amusing romantic comedy."

James Gannon (Clark Gable) is a tough newspaper editor. He hates journalism school until he sees who teaches there. He is impressed by the cute professor Erica Stone (Doris Day). Incognito, James joins her class and soon becomes her best student. However, Professor Stone does not know that he is the James Gannon whom she despises for his statements, much less that she herself is the reason he is there.

Assembly line, but quality assembly line. Clark Gable remains a great actor and this is really his thing. He sometimes reminds me of Sean Connery in this film by the way. Doris Day is not the best actress in this genre, but certainly does not do badly. The film does come across as topical. They talk about the newspaper that has to provide more than just news with the competition from TV and radio. More than ever, that question now also plays a role with the speed at which social media brings news. The film mainly uses that idea as a peg of course and revolves more around Gable and Day who playfully flirt with each other. A typical Hollywood film from the 50s. But I like that, so you won't hear me complain.

Good film in which an editor of a large newspaper takes a beginners' lesson in journalism due to circumstances. A romcom with a fairly standard setup, but well-developed. Entertaining situations with both funny and good dialogues. Doris Day and Clark Gable both do well. Could have been a bit shorter perhaps.

Journalist James Gannon (Clark Gable) is a seasoned newspaper reporter. He believes that practical experience makes a good journalist. In any case, you don't learn the trade on a journalism course taught at university by Erica Stone (Doris Day). As befits a romantic comedy, the two opposites meet when Gannor reluctantly and anonymously shows up at Stone's course.

The rest you can draw. Theory and practice merge. Nice roles of a fresh Day (who fortunately does not burst into song except for a moment) and of a dirty Gable. Nice supporting roles too. Of Mamie van Doren as a sexy nightclub singer and of Gig Young in a humorous role as an all-knowing scientist and source of irritation for Gannon. Nice characters without much depth who all have their funny moments and together display a fine dynamic.

The story holds no surprises. The beginning and end are known. The ingredients with which the story is spiced up are also known, but are fun and effective. A bit of slapstick, a bit of situation comedy, funny dialogues and a lot of sex. Not literally of course, but Gabel is amazed and the word is even mentioned once, I think. And that last one is remarkable for a film from 1958. This is quite fun.
