This isn't such a bad film. The locations, many of the shots, and the art direction are beautiful. Moreover, The Sicilian has many strong scenes. However, the film has some of the weakest dialogue ever seen in a film, the music inappropriately intrudes on the viewer's emotions, and Lambert is indeed a very bad actor. A shame. It's somewhat underrated. Just shy of three stars for a great talent who was ruined by his own office.

Sunday's classics night brought me this The Sicilian, a gamble I picked up at the thrift store. The title sounds good, the cast is decent, and names like Cimeno, the director, and Puzo, the writer of the original, also sound great. But unfortunately, it doesn't guarantee a good film...

Once it's up and running, The Sicilian doesn't seem all that bad, with its beautiful locations, stunning scenery, and delightful style and atmosphere. The setting and unrest between Italy and Sicily are quite interesting, and it also develops into a kind of resistance/war story. The opening, for example, with the two men and their failed Robin Hood-esque grain theft, is also not surprising, with the development of Salvatore's character as a logical consequence. And in that sense, there's definitely an attempt at style and feeling in the film, with fitting traditions and music of the period.

But that's about it, The Sicilian remains more than just an attempt. After the opening, it never gets interesting, bogged down in a lot of blah-blah and trivialities, and the acting is also mediocre. Lambert isn't the best, but Barbara Sukowa takes the cake as the duchess, and besides being a terrible character, she's also an annoyance in terms of acting. All in all, it doesn't make The Sicilian any easier to watch, and in the end, I have no choice but to give it a failing grade. Mediocre film.
